It’s time to get fired up – El Camino Cantina opens for business

Tuesday, 24 May 2016:

Roll up your sleeves and get ready to hit the bar for tacos, tequilas, Margaritas and more when El Camino Cantina brings true Tex-Mex to The Rocks on Wednesday, 25 May.

With enough neon signs to light up the Vegas strip, El Camino Cantina is unashamedly Tex-Mex (not Mexican) in every sense of the word: from the food to the drinks and from the music to the décor.

We’re talking chilli-fuelled classic Tex-Mex dishes such as tacos, fajitas, quesadillas, nachos, enchiladas and burritos, as well as a ghost chilli BBQ burger and chicken wings made with world’s hottest chillies. Desserts include crisp churros tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with cajeta (vanilla salted caramel), and spiced dark chocolate pudding with dulce de leche. There’s also a child-friendly menu, including grilled chicken burrito, crispy fish taco and a grilled Angus beef burger.

Freshly shaken and frozen Margaritas headline a stellar drinks list that includes imported Mexican and house-brewed craft beers, over 200 different tequila and mescal, sangria (by the glass or carafe), and specialty cocktails named after classic rock songs. If you’re looking for some ‘Satisfaction’ try the mix of blanco tequila, fresh lime and grapefruit soda, or try the Voodoo Child, which combines El Camino’s signature Bloody Mary and Mexican lager.

The neon-flooded cantina boasts two bars and a spacious dining room with an eclectic mix of colourful chairs, cosy booths, high topped tables and two restored 1957 Chevy trunks from which diners can help themselves to complimentary chips and salsas. A lounge area called The 27 Club spills onto a terrace overlooking The Argyle precinct’s cobblestone courtyard.

Bare brick and whitewashed walls and high ceilings scream with custom-made neon signage, naked multi-coloured lightbulbs, bright murals, mirrors and bold artwork. Hand-crafted mosaic tiles adorn table tops and walls and the main bar has barbed wire trussed wood beams overhead and a DJ booth that will rock the house.

This mecca for Tex-Mex lovers promises to be more rowdy than a rodeo with a live mariachi band performing from 5pm-7pm every evening for the first two weeks and every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday thereafter. A revolving line up of rock & roll DJs every Friday and Saturday will blow those cowboy boots right off – if the ghost chilli burger and chicken wings don’t. On the 27th of every month, The 27 Club celebrates the iconic lives and music of the members of the 27 Club, from Jimi Hendrix to Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse.

There is something special for everyone with food and drink offers every day of the week, including:
 Margarita Mondays: specials on strawberry, mango and original frozen and shaken Margaritas
 Taco & Tequila Tuesdays: hand-made, $2 corn, flour or hard-shelled tacos and tequila shot specials
 Wing Wednesdays: a dozen spicy chicken wings for $15

 Thirsty Thursday: happy hour from 5pm-7pm, including $12 cocktails, Margarita specials, and $5 beers, including Pacifico, Tecate and Flamin’ Hellcat XXX (house-brewed by Urban Brewing Co.)

 Fajita Fridays: $25 express lunch of sizzling fajita platters, including a glass of Flamin’ Hellcat XXX

 Schools Out Saturdays: student special of $15 quesadilla or nachos, plus a Flamin’ Hellcat XXX or frozen Margarita (12pm – 6pm)

 Sunday Bloody Sunday: recovery session with $12, customised Bloody Marys

Exclusive special offers will also be available to club members.

El Camino Cantina, Sydney’s newest late-night dining and entertainment destination, is available for exclusive hire for up to 350 guests, the main bar can be hired for up to 160 guests, and The 27 Club can entertain 50 guests (cocktail style).

It’s time to kick back with a Margarita, or a cold beer and discover true Tex-Mex.
